In reply to your letter of the 25th ultimo
respecting the duty charged in France on goods im-
ported by you from Formose via Hong Kong, I am direc- ted by the Marquess of Lansdowne to inform you that the extra charge is the "Surtaxe d'entrepôt" which
is applied by the French Government to goods other-
wise entitled to the minimum tariff if they have
been transhipped at a port in a country other than
the country of origin,
His Lordship therefore regrets tnet he is
unable to make a representation to the French Gov-
crnment in this matter.
I am &c.,
(910704) Martin foesslin.
